This is my presentation for the second review of my graduation. A week later we went on our field work to Kumasi.

Als je mij naar de toekomst van de faculteit vraagt, zie ik veel potentie voor de toekomst. Ik zeg dit met vertrouwen, met in mijn achterhoofd de kracht die tentoongespreid werd in de maanden na de brand. Daarbij zitten we nu in een mooi gebouw op een betere plek in de stad.

Wat moet er mijn inziens veranderen om de potentie te verwezenlijken? Allereerst zullen we kritisch moeten kijken naar onszelf als student. Als je wilt dat iets verandert dan moet je het zelf doen; het spreekwoordelijke mes snijdt aan twee kanten. Dat vereist een volwassen en verantwoordelijke houding.
Ten tweede hoeven we niet allemaal dezelfde ambitie te hebben, maar een minimale kritische houding is vereist om de huidige middelmatigheid te verkomen. Dit is haalbaar als we gestrengheid en duidelijkheid van onze docenten én elkaar verwachten.
Ten derde moeten we de keuzevrijheid beter definiëren. Deze vertaalt zich nu in veel van hetzelfde. Liever zou ik in de toekomst zien dat we een samenhangend raamwerk hebben waarin het ontwikkelen van architectuur centraal staat. Verder is mijn ervaring dat het onderwijs nu te veel rust op kwantiteit in plaats van kwaliteit. Het slechts afvinken van het productenlijstje voldoet niet. Daarbij komt dat de presentatie vaak belangrijker is dan de inhoud. Een mooi plaatje maakt nog geen architectuur. Sowieso in een tijd waar architectuur wordt gedefinieerd in concepten is het onzinnig om te focussen op een voorbedacht aantal producten en presentatievorm.
Bovendien is het belangrijk dat de verantwoordelijkheden opnieuw moeten worden benoemd. Iedereen moet de juiste persoon kunnen aanspreken om zaken te verbeteren. Dat zal zeker de regie van de faculteit ten goede komen. Verder moet het verbeteren van de kwaliteit van het onderwijs een belangrijkere plek krijgen in de cultuur van onze faculteit. Als ook de keuze voor Engels als voertaal. Willen we dit daadwerkelijk, zorg dan voor Engels onderwijs voor studenten én docenten.
Tenslotte moet de organisatie van de faculteit als randvoorwaarde op orde zijn. De ambitie zou de beheersbaarheid van het groot aantal studenten moeten zijn. Dit betekent een goed werkend roostering- en inschrijvingssysteem, een werkelijk flexibel gebouw en heldere communicatie.

Wat betreft de financiële situatie? Die zal naar mijn inziens moeten resulteren in meer open samenwerking tussen de afdelingen. Beredeneren vanuit het eigen belangen is niet meer houdbaar. Willen we echt beter uit deze situatie komen dan zullen we met creatievere en slimmere oplossingen moeten komen.

Kortom, ik wil maar zeggen, ook in tijden van financiële heroverwegingen moet de toekomst centraal staan. Het gaat er niet om wat we hebben of hadden, maar waar we naar toe gaan. Op naar wetenschappelijk, innovatief en dynamisch onderwijs!

Presentation

Ambitious
“To boldly go where no man has gone before” so as they say in “Star Trek”. Hearing or reading this sentence always gives me a sensational mix of feelings like expectation, fear and enthusiasm. The result is a drive to get started discovering and understanding things.
An important term for discovering is starting with daring to ask (difficult) questions. But, don’t stop by the question. Why settle for the easy ride. Living in uncertainty is a given. So, I approach things or questions in a wider context.  You could say that is an ambitious way of looking at things.

Not materialistic
A disadvantage of being ambitious is the scale and thereby the overkill of information. Therefore when approaching a subject I always focus on the abstraction of the answer. The underlying task is the clarity in my answer on the main points, resulting in a concept or concentrated/ strong idea. My affection about ideas and abstract world is big, therefore resulting in a not materialistic attitude. A positive outcome of not being materialistic is that it’s possible to come free from the here and now so creativity can flourish. 

Idealistic
The deduction of the information in a concept is also a simplification of the world. The term simplification should by understand in a positive way. Simplicity is for example not the same as being naive, but it’s a more pragmatic wish of understanding the under laying truth. This line of thinking leans on the reasoning that clarity is the purpose of the question. Thus simplification means a creative answer on the complexity of the information and questions. For my there is for each question the pursuit of an idealistic answer.  

Uncompromising
A good answerer, or in my case good architecture, is the result of an uncompromising search for the main values. Believing architecture is, like other things, based on arguments. It doesn’t matter of you here focus on the process or on the result. The process is namely a sum of falling and standing (research by learning) and the result is susceptible to multiple meanings (compromise with reality). Just, on both an uncompromising attitude is the key.

Influence
Taken this all in account, my further nevertheless contains an interesting dilemma. On the one hand I pursue an independent and autonomic existing.  On the other hand I will in some degree be depending of a public or sponsor (most of all in architecture). Thereby I base prestige on the basis of experience instead of authority.Therefore what’s important for me is to be self-conscious and have influence. You could say, in regard of my ambitions, it’s a modest conduct.

Introduction
The professional fascination for these pictures lie’s in the one hand in the clarity and composition (Rossi) and in the other hand in the lightness and transparency (Piano).
Both strike my in there clarity and simplicity. Simplicity in a positive way, maybe best formulated in the term concentrated (strong) architecture.

Comparison
The differences between the pictures are best explained with the keywords.

The images are equally on just a few points. To start with the architects, both are from Italy. An important stream in Italy is Rationalistic architecture. To as harmony, rhythm, symmetry, eye for the character of the materials and the synergy between the building, his destiny and the context.

Expressing it different you cane discover in both buildings this background. Where you could say Rossi has a ‘ classic’ or post modern approach. Piano adds modern material and trays to achieve, in its appearance,  to make a transparent and ‘light’ building.
Both appearances are of course inspired by and imbedded in their time.

Analyze New York Times

Type
High rise (form) glass and screens of ceramic rods (material) public (accessibility) space and light (radiance) office building (program).

Concept
The concept of the New York Times building is baste on the goal of bringing the city and the newspaper together. The Times tower is a fully glass-enclosed building. Its only unclear surfaces are its exposed structure, and the inventive sunscreen that keeps the building from overheating yet allows its clarity to read through. To emphasize transparency, the designers used a low-iron, water-white glass, clear as crystal, without a trace of tint. This essentially brings the inside and outside together.

Model
The concept is shaped in this drawing of Renzo Piano. The drawing features in my optic two points; 1) The connection between the tower and the city by it’s transparency. 2) And the echo of live of the city reflects in the news paper.

Program
This building is a real estate investment on the newspaper’s part, a joint development venture with Forest City Ratner Companies, which owns 42 percent of it. The Times occupies floors two through 27, and their development partner rents out the rest, save for floors 28, 51, and the lobby space, which are co-owned. Commercial spaces on either side of the courtyard will are occupied by retail tenants.

Analyze Hotel Il Palazzo

Type
Geometry (form) brick masonry with expressed steel lintels (material) public (accessibility) reinterpretation of classical orders (radiance) hotel (program).

Concept
The concept of the building is in my optic based on the notion of a Palace on a plint with outbuildings. For all is buildings counts that he tries to abstract building types from his research to find elemental and clear shapes. Also in this design is the abstraction and reduction easy to recognize.

Model
Aldo Rossi is an architect who expresses himself with drawings. This drawing shows a first sketch of the hotel. It’s already saying a lot about the final design in it’s material, color, facade.

Program
The program of this building consists of a hotel with support program to as a disco, bar, restaurant and square. On the picture you can see the entrance to the disco on the front and on the square the entrance to the hotel with al it’s corresponding program. It’s actually not a really big hotel, but because of the frontal facade it’s very demanding.

Stad van mijn verbeelding

“Als alles een verhaal is. Waarom een stad dan niet?” dacht de toerist terwijl hij over straat liep. In de reisgids stond de stad beschreven als ‘een pallet aan karakters aaneengeschakeld met gebieden van  hoge kwaliteit’. Wat meteen opviel als je de stad binnenliep was in ieder geval de chaos. Geen vervelende, onoverzichtelijke chaos. Niet meteen was duidelijk waarom. Meer de chaos die heerst tussen kinderen op een basisschoolplein tijdens de pauze.

De man grinnikte. Hij zag de toerist, herkenbaar aan zijn langzame pas en grote ogen, die ieder detail wilde zien, observerend bij het kruispunt staan. Hij probeerde te zien wat hij zag. Vervolgens maakte hij een foto van wat er ontbrak,  de stoplichten. Het was meer dan dat natuurlijk, maar het viel als eerste op. Door de hele stad was niet geprobeerd de verkeersstromingen te beheersen. Hierdoor ontstond een zichzelf regulerende dynamiek.

Opgelet! De fietser groette vriendelijk ten teken dat hij de toerist had gezien, die verder de straat overstak. “Door het langzame tempo,” besefte de toerist “blijft het overzichtelijk”. Terwijl hij langs groepjes kletsende mensen liep, zag hij dat anderen de rust gebruikten om iets te kopen bij een kraampje langs de kant van de weg. De dynamiek nam toe naarmate hij de stad verder inliep. Boven en onder hem gebeurde nu vanalles.

“Daar waren de bewoners van deze stad nog het meest trots op”, dacht de man terwijl hij zag dat boven de toerist de tram zweefde. De architecten hadden het ‘bewegen in 3d’ genoemd . Stadspleinen op vier hoog. Openbaar vervoer op het niveau van de eerste verdieping. Straatparken slingerend door de stad. Entreegebied van de gebouwen verdeelt over de begane grond en een niveau daaronder. En dit alles is verbonden via monumentale trappen, hellingbanen en liften.   

Terwijl het een nieuwe stad was, leek die toch langzaam te zijn ontstaan. In de straat waar hij nu doorheen liep, was niets hetzelfde. De banken zagen er creatief en inventief uit, doordat ze ook als fietsenrek werden gebruikt. Ze hadden een zelfgemaakt uiterlijk. In andere steden bestaat de publieke ruimte veelal uit niemandsland met een weinig ambitieuze aankleding. Nu eigenden de bewoners zich de straat toe, leek het.

De man zag dat de toerist door Artwijk  liep, terwijl hij de toerist nieuwsgierig naar boven volgde. Net als alle andere buurten en wijken in de stad, hebben deze een sterk eigen identiteit meegekregen met verschillen tussen beroepen, leeftijd,  onderwijs en cultuur. In deze wijk was ruimte voor o.a. creatieve bureautjes, galerijen en lege plekken waar van alles kon ontstaan. De publieke ruimte werd gebruikt om de eigen identiteit te versterken.

Hij liep nu in een straatpark. Dit verbond belangrijke plekken hemelsbreed met elkaar. Langs, over en door gebouwen. Op de kaart stond dat hij nu langzaam een van de stadspleinen naderde. In de reisgids stond: “als schakel tussen de omliggende wijken functioneert dit plein als communicatieplek voor de stad. Men komt hier samen, spreekt er af bij mooi weer of bij slecht weer in de stadshal. Deze is gelegen aan het plein en specifiek ontworpen voor dit doel.”

 We naderen het stadsplein zag de man en hij dacht: “samenleven is communiceren. Om te communiceren moet je worden verleid tot het vertragen van je tempo.” De stad had hiervoor stadspleinen gefaciliteerd. Aan de stadspleinen lagen de vorm gekregen idealen van de stad zoals een park, universiteit en een gerechtsgebouw. Ieder gebouw als pronkstuk van een eigen wijk. Aan dit plein lag een museum.

Plotseling stond hij op het plein met ruim zicht op een mooi museum. Hier was duidelijk veel aandacht besteed aan de aankleding. De duurste materialen waren gebruikt. In een van de hoeken was er een amfitheater. Nu viel hem pas op hoe weinig groen hij in de stad was tegengekomen. Het leek alsof het groen zich had teruggetrokken naar de pleinen en de parken.

Hij versnelde zijn pas en zag de toerist de hoek omgaan. Hij wilde die nu niet uit het oog verliezen. Graag zou hij hem aanspreken om te weten te komen wat de toerist van zijn stad vond.  

De toerist liep richting de stadshal waar volgens de reisgids vele barretjes zaten. Hij had behoefte aan een koffiepauze voordat hij het museum ging verkennen. Hij stak het plein over en zag dat dit intensief werd gebruikt. De stedelijke hectiek leek geheel tot rust gekomen. Schoolklassen stonden klaar voor een museumbezoek, oudjes zaten te schaken en hij zag mensen picknicken. Langzaam zocht hij zich een weg door de massa.

Last January I participated in a masterclass organized by the Architectuur Centrum Twente: 52°18’ NB en 6°38’ OL Playtime. In a group with students from the Academie of Tilburg, the Saxionhogeschool in Enschede and the ArteZ AKI Enschede whey where ask to formalise a vision on a location near Almelo. (With the coördinades 52°18’ NB en 6°38’ OL) The intentions for the location was to create with recreation a place to by for the surroundings and the province.

Why came up with the idea for a EcoPark. It’s a combination between the exsiting industrial park XL, the ecologic and natural surroundings and the geographic location (between Germany and the Randstad). Eco in Ecopark stance for a sustainable environment. The lobby and research for this has in the world not yet a place for its own so why want to  facilitate that in Twente with a congress centre, a museum about the environment, a hotel in windmeals and a development centre for the University of Twente and companies.

ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES

Program architectural studies (AR1Ai031) seminar, fall 2008:

“An analysis always implies a choice. Analytical drawings extract the information relevant to present this idea. By analyzing buildings students will not only get a better understanding of how ideas can be translated into architecture. They will also get a broader understanding of how any built work represents a position in an architectural discourse and should always be considered in the context of the social and political situation. The seminar provides students with specific analytical tools and research methods. These start with a number of exercises and the building of a model, to be followed by a research with a specific theme of their own interest. These themes and tools can then also be empoyed by the student to look at his or her own project critically.”

First impression
A simple lay-out. The main lay-out exist of a white back-ground, whit-in a small strip with black as the basic color. In the strip; on the left, the title and the menu of the site are put. At the right a image – it’s not entirely clear whats on it. If you put your cursor on the image, it will change from color and texture. When you click trough the site this design of a strip with text and menu stays the same. Only one diverents, the images, supporting the text, appear under the strip. There is no introduction or personal note.

Visual
Visual the web-site is personal shaped, but not very strong. The menu on the left site changes from appearance, it’s gains a table look. The texts over-all are sometimes a bit small. The quality of the images are also not high and the choice for some images are curious. By clicking on some images they move over the text.

Contents
The level of the text is good, I liked the conceptional strong ideas by the designs. The chapters Iconagraphy and the Organogram are also interesting. The Graduation proposal was a bite casual and not very original.

Overall
I think that the web-site of Rik has potential but is to modest. In spite of his good ideas, he lack’s to give them, on the web-site, a finishing touch so the sell them self. The main remark is that the web-site, despite the personal lay-out, has a visual unprofessional look.

For my graduation I want to research the tension in and the possibilities for building underneath the ground.

In a society where city’s are everyday more important, the possibilities for upgrading the density off these city’s need to by researched.  If you take Holland for example; the rural population here is shrinking. Research shows  that people are moving to places where there is work, culture and provisions. To summarize; the move to a dynamic living environment. Beside that the city’s are expending in size to answer the demand, they are looking for solutions to condense the city centers. They do this by efficient use of building area’s; yousing skyscrapers and utilize the free and less build area’s. But the question I ask my self is why not think in 4D? Why not trying to go under the ground? Why stop by the surface if there is a treasure of promises under the ground? Whey do it already whit parking-places and metro’s, why not explore the potential more?

Name underground building and the first tensions mentioned are: light, aer and possibly height differences. This are plausible arguments to take in consideration. It means also that not every building type is suitable for building under the ground. In construction therms questions rice about water management, isolation, strength and so on. All to research by designing a building under the ground.

To make my proposal concrete, a good research subject would by a project in therms of the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. The function, fairs and congresses, are perfect for under the ground because the need no natural light. The Jaarbeurs also take a lot off square meters from the centre of Utrecht and offer just a one dimensional use. If it’s possible to put theme under the ground you create room for dwelling, parks and offices.

The Loop

Neighborhood library with 50 starter houses on the Javaplein, heart of Amsterdam-East. Building as an urban accelerator.

Vision
A accelerator by decelerate; The neighborhood must especially get a spot where people come together and meet. A meeting-place you can however only create if you seduce people to slow down. Rest in the everyday, urban hectic. I interpret the design assignment therefore as a paradox.

Urbanism: Assume the existing relevance. The Javastraat and 1st of Swindenstraat have both their own dynamics. The proposal is to link the streets and extend to the Flevopark. Because of this arises a street exceeding consistency. At the same time it ensured the anchoring of the Java square in the district.

Urban context
The most important additive to the urban context are the two squares. The first is the Javaplein that passes into my building and service the entry of the library. The other one is for the entry of the apartments. The two squares are framed whit gateways. The most important and largest gateway has been situated at the Javaplein side. The Second has been situated at the Molukkenstraat. The gateway of the apartments has the same language as the gateways of the Javaplein, such as the altitude, but is more intimate.

The library himself has been designed as a loop (no end). Thereby there is continuity in the design symbolic for timelessness, a theme that every library contains. The entrance of the library is on the corner of the Javaplein and the Molukkenstraat and is also the reading-cafe where it’s possible to organize readings and exhibitions.

Concept library
The concept for the division of the library contains two routes. The first is the public and fast route, clear vision is important. The route runs at the street side and has a clear (open) relation with the surroundings.

The second route is the concentration and slow route. This route character’s itself by quiet study and reading places. By this route you go on adventure trough the library; these have been subdivided by different altitudes, walking bridge, podia and stairs.
The book cupboard is the separation between the two routes.

Because of the enormous overpressure of the gateways (+/- 40m) I have chosen to overstrain the construction whit a bridge construction. They define also the façade.

I have experienced that my working method if as followed to reflect. (See diagram working method (part of) design.

An explanation:

It begins with stipulating the `problem’. The problem is a (part) question of the design, or whatever you must determine, to obtain a design (solution).

‘Leave to rest’ means that you withdraw yourself from the process. It is important that thereby the work lies to rest to settle. This can be a couple hour or a couple days, depending on the state of mind.

From that follows that you’re critically study the process. Step; ‘To reflect on’. This means that you search for the depth in the project. Questions which can rise are; Am I studying the right problem? Did I overlook something? How did I come at/ to this problem? Are there similar, reference problems? What will I exactly examine? How did an another one this?

After this you will get started and produce a lot. Marquis, sketches, etc. First try outs, trying everything, ugly marquis, everything can. This will demand a big commitment.

Eventually you take distance and leave your work to rest. This distance is necessary to criticize your own work. `To reflect on’ now contents that you work present to others. What do they find of your arguments, choices? This phase helps focusing. It becomes from this point concreter.

During the process several steps back are conceivable. Depending on the progress at determine the problem you can return a step. It is possible that producing also has several stages. (See the arrows)

In the book Eeuwige Schoonheid of E.H. Gombrich I encountered the next passage; “Dit streven naar helderheid blijkt niet alleen uit de geschilderde illustraties, maar ook uit een reliëfwerk als het gedeelte van een bronzen deur die kort na 1000 voor een kerk te Hildesheim in Duitsland besteld was, afb. 108. Wij zien God de Vader, na de Zondeval, op Adam en Eva toetreden. Op dit reliëf staat niets dat niet tot het verhaal behoort. Maar door deze concentratie op de hoofdzaken, waardoor de figuren duidelijk tegen de gladde achtegrond komen te staan, kunnen we als het ware ‘lezen’ wat hun gebaren zeggen: God wijst op Adam, Adam op Eva en Eva op de slang op de grond. De onderscheiding van de schuld en de oorsprong van het kwade zijn zo krachtig uitgedrukt, dat wij graag vergeten dat de proporties van de gestalten niet juist zijn en de lichamen niet mooi.” Page 167.

This passage stands in the chapter De westerse kunst in de smeltkroes, Europa, zesde tot elfde eeuw, and tells, summarized, about art and their purpose in the middle ages. Also a cited on the same page, pope Gregorius the great; schilderingen voor de ongeletterde hetzelfde kunnen uitrichten wat het schrift doet voor hen die kunnen lezen.” The meaning off this quote is that the art can by used to telling a tale.

With the text from the book Eeuwige Schoonheid I see a relation with design tasks. To design you can interpret as telling a tale. The design is a form, such as book, in which the tale of the context, the history, the user and the future comes together. At every design task constantly lay’s the task to search the concept (the tale) of your design. And there by aiming and strive for clarity and concentration on the main points.
